Financial Stability

To address the obstacles that prevent hard working families from getting ahead financially, United Way of Greater Mercer County (UWGMC) launched the United Financial Empowerment Collaborative to help families meet their basic needs, while gaining the financial capability to plan for, and accomplish, their long-term financial goals. For families walking a financial tightrope, unable to save for college, a home, or retirement, United Way of Greater Mercer County(UWGMC) is here to help.

Savings at Tax Time
UWGMC and the Mercer CASH campaign will focus on increasing savings at tax time with VITA taxpayers. For many low-income families tax time may be the only time they have a large sum of money that could be put into savings. Savings at Tax Time – a program of Commonwealth and America Saves promotes savings through tax returns by having taxpayers use the IRS 8888 to place part of their refund in a savings account. Taxpayers are incentivized by entering themselves into weekly drawings and two grand prizes of $10,000. We will encourage taxpayers to save what they spend on tax preparation! If a taxpayer saves at tax time they will be enrolled in a drawing for $100 and other prizes, but more importantly they will have created their own safety-net by having savings for the emergencies that arise during the course of the year.
